Construction Cost Analyst

About the client

The client is a long-established, Gold Master Electricians-accredited electrical contracting business specializing exclusively in new residential construction.

They partner with major builders across Queensland, delivering high-volume electrical installations, including:

  • Lead-ins

  • Rough-ins

  • Fit-offs

  • Appliances

  • Vents and variations

As they scale and volume continues to grow, they are creating a specialist analytical role focused on estimating accuracy, job costing discipline, and profitability visibility across hundreds of residential builds.

Purpose of the Role

The Construction Cost Analyst will be responsible for turning builder purchase orders and operational data into clear, actionable profitability insights.

This role exists to:

  • Accurately break down jobs into labor and material components.

  • Set realistic labor targets for field teams.

  • Track actual performance versus estimates

  • Identify where margin is created or lost at each build stage.

  • Provide reliable reporting to support pricing, productivity, and growth decisions

This is a business-critical role that directly impacts margin control, scalability, and data-driven decision-making.

Key Responsibilities

1. Estimating & Purchase Order Breakdown

  • Break down builder purchase orders into job stages:

    • Lead-in

    • Rough-in

    • Fit-off

    • Appliances

    • Vents

    • Variations

  • Allocate for each stage:

    • Material cost

    • Labour hours

    • Labour cost

  • Identify:

    • True margin per house

    • Profitable vs loss-making stages

2. Job Cost Tracking & Analysis

  • Analyze job data using:

    • MYOB – job-coded purchases and invoices

    • ServiceM8 – labor time, travel time, job history

  • Compare:

    • Estimated vs actual labor hours

    • Estimated vs actual material spend

  • Track:

    • Productivity by job, stage, and crew

    • Travel time impact

    • Rework and warranty cost impact

3. Labor Target Setting

  • Build and maintain:

    • Labor hour targets per job type

    • Labor hour targets per job stage

  • Provide:

    • Clear target hours to management and supervisors

    • Ongoing performance feedback based on actual data

4. Profit & Loss Reporting

  • Produce:

    • Daily and weekly job profitability snapshots

    • Monthly margin reports by builder and job type

  • Identify:

    • Loss-making jobs

    • Loss-making builders or job types

    • Margin erosion trends

  • Highlight:

    • Pricing issues

    • Productivity issues

    • Scope creep or uncharged variations

5. Continuous Improvement

  • Refine:

    • Estimating templates

    • Labor models

    • Cost assumptions

  • Build benchmark data across hundreds of homes.

  • Support management with:

    • Price reviews

    • Builder negotiations

    • Operational and process improvements

Systems You Will Use

  • MYOB – job costing and purchasing

  • ServiceM8 – labor time, travel time, job data

  • Excel / Google Sheets – advanced analysis and reporting

  • Builder purchase orders and schedules

 

Required Skills & Experience

  • Strong experience in at least one of:

    • Estimating

    • Job costing

    • Financial or commercial analysis

  • Advanced Excel/spreadsheet skills:

    • Formulas

    • Pivot tables

    • Reporting dashboards

  • Exceptional numerical accuracy and attention to detail

  • Ability to analyze large data sets and identify trends

  • Comfortable working:

    • Remotely and independently

    • With Australian time zones

Highly Regarded (Not Essential)

  • Experience in Electrical, construction, or trade-based businesses

  • Familiarity with MYOB, ServiceM8 or similar field service systems

  • Understanding of Labor productivity metrics, Construction job costing, Trade-based estimating models
