Junior Accountant with Bookkeeping Skills

Job Overview

This is a part-time remote position offering 20 hours per week with potential to grow into a full-time accountant role as the business expands. The ideal candidate will serve as an in-house financial partner who understands the business context rather than processing transactions in isolation. This role combines traditional bookkeeping with project cost management, budget analysis, and operational finance tasks for a startup environment.

Client Overview

A growing startup company in the UK seeking to bring bookkeeping and accounting functions in-house for better continuity and business knowledge. The organization requires proactive financial management support as they scale operations and implement new financial systems.

Schedule:

  • Mon-Fri 11:00 - 15:00 GMT

  • Client Timezone: Greenwich Mean Time

Responsibilities

  • Perform monthly bookkeeping tasks including transaction recording, reconciliations, and maintaining accurate financial records.
  • Manage VAT returns preparation and submission in compliance with UK tax requirements.
  • Set up and administer payroll systems for new employees and process ongoing payroll requirements.
  • Implement and manage an expenses application system including employee registration and monthly expense processing.
  • Track and allocate project expenditures against approved budgets, providing proactive alerts when spending approaches limits.
  • Conduct financial analysis tasks using spreadsheets to support business decision-making.
  • Make informed recommendations on accounting software selection and financial process improvements.
  • Communicate proactively about questions or uncertainties rather than making assumptions on complex matters.

Must-Have Requirements

  • Minimum 2-3 years of professional accounting or bookkeeping experience.
  • Demonstrated proficiency with Xero and QuickBooks accounting software.
  • Strong experience working with UK-based clients and understanding of UK financial regulations.
  • Proven ability to manage project budgets and allocate costs to specific initiatives.
  • Excellent problem-solving skills with demonstrated common sense in ambiguous situations.

Nice-to-Have Requirements

  • Experience supporting startup or growing businesses in a direct partnership capacity.
  • Background in both bookkeeping execution and higher-level accounting analysis.
  • Comfortable making process recommendations and software selection guidance based on professional experience.
  • Self-directed working style with ability to execute tasks from clear instructions independently.

  • This is a permanent work-from-home role under an Independent Contractor arrangement.
