Senior Financial Controller (Health Tech Client)
Position Overview
BruntWork is seeking a Senior Financial Controller for our client based in California, USA. In this role, you will lead all accounting operations, financial reporting, and internal controls. You will play a critical role to ensure accuracy, compliance (including healthcare-related regulations), and scalability of financial processes. You are someone that brings a mix of technical accounting expertise, healthcare or health tech experience, and a proactive, systems-oriented mindset. This position will require doing day-to-day operation work (ie. AP, AR, payroll), month-end close (ie. bank reconciliations, balance sheet reconciliations, month-end journal entries, creating month-end package along with month-over-month variance analysis). You will report to the Chief Accounting Officer and will have one part-time Accounting Manager reporting to them.
Key Responsibilities
Accounting & Financial Reporting
- Perform day-to-day operations including but not limited to:
- Coding bank and credit card transactions
- Accounts payable
- Accounts receivable
- Payroll
- Employee expense reimbursements
- Updating and managing prepaids, accruals and fixed asset schedules
- Intercompany journal entries
- Perform and oversee the monthly, quarterly, and annual close process
- Ensure timely and accurate financial statements in accordance with GAAP
- Maintain the general ledger and supporting schedules
- Lead revenue recognition, including complex arrangements (e.g., SaaS, value-based care models)
Compliance & Controls
- Establish and maintain a strong internal control environment (SOX-ready, if applicable)
- Ensure compliance with healthcare-related financial regulations and reporting requirements
- Support audit readiness and manage external audits
- Maintain policies and procedures documentation
Healthcare & Data Considerations
- Oversee accounting for healthcare-specific items such as claims, reimbursements, and payer contracts
- Partner with operations on revenue cycle and data integrity (e.g., claims, billing, collections)
- Ensure proper handling of sensitive financial data in alignment with privacy frameworks such as HIPAA (in coordination with compliance/security teams)
Process Improvement & Systems
- Build scalable accounting processes to support company growth
- Evaluate and implement accounting systems and automation tools
- Drive continuous improvement in close timelines and reporting accuracy
Team Leadership
- Build, manage, and mentor the accounting team
- Foster a culture of accountability, collaboration, and continuous improvement
Cross-Functional Collaboration
- Partner with FP&A, operations, legal, and executive leadership
- Support strategic initiatives, including fundraising, due diligence, and expansion
Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in Accounting or Finance (CPA strongly preferred)
- 6–10+ years of progressive accounting experience (mix of public accounting and industry preferred)
- Experience in healthcare, health tech, tech or SaaS environments
- Strong knowledge of GAAP, revenue recognition, and internal controls
- Experience with audit processes and financial compliance
- Familiarity with healthcare billing, claims, or reimbursement models is a plus
- Experience with ERP systems (e.g., QBO) and financial tools (e.g. BILL.com, Brex, Rippling, Slack)
