Bookkeeper

Job Overview

Our client is seeking a highly detail-oriented and compliance-driven Bookkeeper  to support the financial operations of a busy legal firm. You will focus on managing client trust accounts, maintaining precise financial records, and supporting end-to-end legal billing and reporting processes. You will work closely with internal stakeholders and an outsourced finance provider to ensure all financial processes are accurate, timely, and audit-ready.

Schedule

  • Monday - Friday, 9:00 AM - 6:00 PM AEST/AEDT, with 1 hour unpaid break (40 hours per week)

Responsibilities

  • Trust Account Reconciliation: Manage trust account transactions and reconciliations (but this is a fairly simple process)
  • Transactional Accounting: Handle accounts receivable and accounts payable, including debtor management, payment allocation, and diligent follow-ups.
  • Reconciliations: Perform daily bank reconciliations and balance sheet reconciliations with a high level of accuracy.
  • Billing Cycle: Manage the end-to-end billing cycle, including invoice generation, tracking disbursements, and generating aged debtor reports.
  • Basic Tax & Reporting: Prepare BAS, GST reporting, and trust-related tax adjustments; produce monthly trust reconciliation reports for firm leadership and auditors.
  • Stakeholder Collaboration: Coordinate with an outsourced finance provider to ensure all deadlines and reporting obligations are consistently met.

Requirements

  • Experience: Minimum 2 years’ experience in bookkeeping or finance, ideally within a professional services environment.
  • Technical Proficiency: Strong experience with Xero. Ability to learn ActionStep. 
  • Advanced Tools: Proficiency in Microsoft Excel, specifically for reconciliation and reporting functions.
  • Compliance Knowledge: Must be able to learn to do GST, BAS preparation, and general accounting principles within a legal context. Prior experience a bonus.
  • Mindset: A high attention to detail with a process-driven and "compliance-first" mindset.
  • Communication: Strong verbal and written English communication skills for managing deadlines and coordinating with external providers.
