Accountant (Australian Tax & Compliance)

Job Overview

We are seeking an experienced Accountant with strong Australian tax and compliance experience to join our growing team. This role will primarily focus on preparing year-end financial statements, tax returns, Business Activity Statements (BAS), and Fringe Benefits Tax (FBT) returns for a diverse portfolio of Australian clients.

The ideal candidate has hands-on experience working within an Australian accounting practice, possesses strong technical tax knowledge, and can independently manage client compliance obligations while maintaining a high level of accuracy and attention to detail.

Schedule: 40 hours per week, Mon to Fri, 8AM to 5PM Australian Eastern Time (1-hour unpaid break)

Key Responsibilities

  • Prepare year-end financial statements for individuals, companies, trusts, partnerships, and other entities
  • Prepare and lodge Australian income tax returns in accordance with ATO requirements
  • Prepare and manage Business Activity Statements (BAS) and Instalment Activity Statements (IAS)
  • Prepare and assist with annual Fringe Benefits Tax (FBT) returns
  • Review client financial records and identify discrepancies or compliance issues
  • Extract, analyze, and reconcile financial data from bookkeeping systems
  • Ensure all compliance deadlines are met accurately and on time
  • Maintain complete and organized client records and supporting documentation
  • Liaise with internal stakeholders regarding client compliance requirements
  • Support Australian tax planning and compliance activities where required

Tools & Systems

  • Xero (required)
  • Xero Practice Manager (highly preferred)
  • MYOB (advantageous)
  • Microsoft Excel and related reporting tools

Requirements

  • Bachelor's Degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field
  • CPA or CA qualification required
  • Minimum 3 years of Australian accounting experience within an accounting firm or public practice environment
  • Strong experience preparing:
    • Year-End Financial Statements
    • Australian Tax Returns
    • BAS and IAS
    • Fringe Benefits Tax (FBT) Returns
  • Strong understanding of Australian taxation and compliance requirements
  • Advanced proficiency in Xero and related accounting software
  • Excellent attention to detail and ability to work independently
  • Strong written and verbal English communication skills

Highly Preferred

  • Experience working for Australian accounting or taxation firms
  • Exposure to multiple client portfolios
  • Experience managing compliance deadlines across various entity types
  • Previous experience working remotely or within an outsourced accounting environment
  • Familiarity with Xero Practice Manager and other Australian accounting practice software
