Job Overview
Our client is seeking a Senior Financial Controller based in California, USA. In this role, you will lead all accounting operations, financial reporting, and internal controls. You will play a critical role in ensuring accuracy, compliance (including healthcare-related regulations), and scalability of financial processes.
The ideal candidate brings a combination of strong technical accounting expertise, healthcare or health tech experience, and a proactive systems-oriented mindset. In addition to traditional accounting leadership, the client is seeking someone who embraces modern technology, automation, and AI-driven process improvements. Experience leveraging AI tools—particularly Claude AI—for financial analysis, reporting workflows, documentation, reconciliations, research, and operational efficiencies is highly preferred.
This position requires hands-on involvement in day-to-day accounting operations (AP, AR, payroll), month-end close activities (bank reconciliations, balance sheet reconciliations, journal entries, financial reporting packages, and variance analysis), while also identifying opportunities to improve processes through automation, AI, and scalable systems.
You will report directly to the Chief Accounting Officer and will manage one part-time Accounting Manager.

Responsibilities
Accounting & Financial Reporting
- Perform day-to-day accounting operations including:
- Coding bank and credit card transactions
- Accounts payable
- Accounts receivable
- Payroll
- Employee expense reimbursements
- Managing prepaids, accruals, and fixed asset schedules
- Intercompany journal entries
- Perform and oversee monthly, quarterly, and annual close processes
- Ensure timely and accurate financial statements in accordance with GAAP
- Maintain the general ledger and supporting schedules
- Lead revenue recognition, including complex arrangements (e.g., SaaS and value-based care models)
- Utilize AI tools such as Claude AI to assist with financial analysis, reconciliations, variance reviews, reporting preparation, and process documentation while maintaining appropriate accounting oversight and professional judgment
Compliance & Controls
- Establish and maintain a strong internal control environment (SOX-ready, if applicable)
- Ensure compliance with healthcare-related financial regulations and reporting requirements
- Support audit readiness and manage external audits
- Maintain policies, procedures, and accounting documentation
- Leverage AI tools where appropriate to improve documentation quality, control monitoring, and workflow consistency
Healthcare & Data Considerations
- Oversee accounting for healthcare-specific items such as claims, reimbursements, and payer contracts
- Partner with operations on revenue cycle and data integrity (claims, billing, collections)
- Ensure proper handling of sensitive financial data in alignment with privacy frameworks such as HIPAA, in coordination with compliance and security teams
Process Improvement, Automation & AI
- Build scalable accounting processes to support company growth
- Evaluate and implement accounting systems, automation platforms, and AI-enabled tools
- Drive continuous improvement in close timelines and reporting accuracy
- Identify opportunities to reduce manual effort through workflow automation and AI-assisted processes
- Develop best practices for responsible use of AI tools, including Claude AI, within accounting and finance operations
- Partner with leadership to integrate AI-driven efficiencies into reporting, analysis, and operational workflows
Team Leadership
- Build, manage, and mentor the accounting team
- Foster a culture of accountability, collaboration, continuous improvement, and innovation
- Promote adoption of automation and AI tools that improve productivity and accuracy
Cross-Functional Collaboration
- Partner with FP&A, operations, legal, and executive leadership
- Support strategic initiatives including fundraising, due diligence, and expansion activities
- Collaborate with business stakeholders to identify opportunities for process optimization using automation and AI technologies
Requirements
- Strong knowledge of GAAP, revenue recognition, and internal controls
- Experience with audit processes and financial compliance
- Familiarity with healthcare billing, claims, or reimbursement models is a plus
- Experience with ERP systems (e.g., QuickBooks Online) and financial tools (e.g., BILL.com, Brex, Rippling, Slack)
- Experience using AI tools within finance, accounting, reporting, research, documentation, or workflow optimization
- Strong preference for candidates who have practical experience utilizing Claude AI to improve accounting processes, reporting efficiency, and operational effectiveness
- Strong attention to detail and ownership mindset
- Willingness to work both strategically and hands-on in day-to-day accounting operations
- Ability to operate in a fast-paced, evolving environment
- Excellent communication and leadership skills
- Systems thinker with a focus on scalability, automation, and AI adoption
Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in Accounting or Finance (CPA strongly preferred)
- 6–10+ years of progressive accounting experience (mix of public accounting and industry preferred)
- Experience in healthcare, health tech, tech, or SaaS environments
- Demonstrated experience implementing process improvements through automation, AI tools, or modern finance technology platforms preferred
