Job Overview
Our client is seeking an experienced Senior Australian Tax Accountant to lead the completion of outstanding taxation and compliance requirements for an Indigenous community trust and corporation. This role will focus on finalizing and submitting three years of backlogged tax returns, ensuring compliance with Australian taxation regulations, establishing robust financial governance frameworks, and providing strategic financial reporting to support organizational decision-making.
The successful candidate will serve as the lead accounting professional, working closely with stakeholders, auditors, and management to strengthen financial controls and ensure accurate reporting across both charitable and commercial activities.
Responsibilities
- Tax Compliance & Historical Financial Review: Review and finalize three years of outstanding tax returns. Prepare and submit all required tax filings within agreed project timelines. Review historical reconciliations and validate the accuracy of financial records. Prepare and lodge BAS returns and ensure compliance with Australian tax obligations. Manage GST and PAYG compliance requirements. Liaise with auditors and provide supporting documentation for annual audits. Resolve historical accounting discrepancies and compliance issues.
- Financial Reporting & Analysis: Prepare monthly management reports against established goals and targets. Analyze financial performance and identify key trends, risks, and opportunities. Provide recommendations to improve financial outcomes and operational efficiency. Prepare annual financial statements and year-end reporting packages. Present financial insights to leadership and key stakeholders.
- Governance & Process Improvement: Develop, document, and implement accounting policies and procedures. Strengthen internal controls and financial governance frameworks. Create standardized reporting templates and accounting workflows. Ensure compliance with Australian accounting standards and regulatory requirements.
- Stakeholder Management: Work closely with management, auditors, and external advisors. Provide guidance on taxation, compliance, and financial reporting matters. Support staff through financial literacy and reporting education initiatives.
Requirements
- Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field.
- 8–10 years of accounting experience within Australian accounting environments.
- Extensive experience preparing and lodging BAS returns.
- Strong knowledge of GST, PAYG, and Australian taxation regulations.
- Proven experience finalizing corporate and trust tax returns.
- Advanced experience with Xero and Microsoft Excel.
- Experience preparing audit workpapers and supporting external audits.
- Strong financial reporting and analytical skills.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
Preferred Qualifications
- CPA or CA qualification preferred.
- Experience working with Indigenous organizations, community trusts, or non-profit entities preferred.
- Experience managing historical accounting cleanup projects preferred.
- Background in policy and procedure development preferred.
- Experience supporting organizations with both charitable and commercial activities preferred.
