Job Overview

Our client is seeking a hands-on, Fractional Head of Finance (DTC & E-Commerce) to own financial strategy and oversight for a fast-growing DTC brand. This is a builder role focused on cash flow, KPIs, and vendor/inventory economics rather than transactional bookkeeping, which is handled by an outsourced accountant. In this role, you will set direction and review financial work rather than perform raw data entry. Reporting directly to the CFO/COO, this position is designed to transition into a full-time role as business revenue scales toward $10M.

Schedule

• Monday - Friday, Hours Flexible [Pacific Time] (~16 work hours per week)

Note: Hours are flexible during client business hours (San Diego, CA). Initial commitment is approximately 16 hours per week, with structured growth into full-time as the business scales.

Responsibilities

• Cash Flow & Financial Planning: Own and maintain the company's cash flow model, including COGS, contract manufacturer (co-man) payment timing, and inventory cash cycles; build rolling 13-week cash flow forecasts and longer-range scenario plans tied to growth targets; monitor the cash conversion cycle to flag working capital risks.
• Accountant Oversight & Monthly Close: Oversee the outsourced accountant's monthly close process, reviewing for accuracy, timeliness, and proper COGS/inventory treatment; act as the primary point person to ensure the close happens on a consistent schedule and financials remain board- and lender-ready; catch and correct issues before they compound.
• KPI Development & Reporting: Design and maintain a comprehensive KPI dashboard tracking revenue, margin, CAC/LTV, contribution margin by SKU/channel, and inventory turns; deliver a monthly reporting package to the CFO with a clear strategic narrative.
• Sourcing & Vendor Finance: Support sourcing decisions with landed cost modeling (freight, duties, MOQs, payment terms); manage payment terms with suppliers and co-manufacturers; maintain SKU-level cost roll-ups to track true margin as input costs shift.
• 3PL & Inventory Management: Manage the 3PL relationship financially, tracking storage fees, pick/pack costs, and freight versus contract terms; own inventory accounting logic (COGS recognition, reconciling units shipped vs. billed vs. on-hand) while handing off execution to the accountant; partner with operations on inventory planning inputs to avoid stockouts or excess stock.
• Strategic Finance: Build pricing and promotional models evaluating the margin impact of discounts and product bundles; act as a strategic thought partner to the founder on growth investments such as ad spend, headcount, and new SKU development.

Requirements

• Minimum of 5+ years of experience in finance or accounting, ideally within the DTC, CPG, or e-commerce sectors.
• Advanced proficiency in financial modeling, with the ability to build complex models from scratch in Microsoft Excel or Google Sheets.
• Proven experience reviewing, managing, or overseeing bookkeepers or accountants rather than solely performing transactional data entry.

Qualifications

• Familiarity with Shopify, QuickBooks, NetSuite, and specialized 3PL or inventory management systems is highly preferred.

Growth Path

• This role is structured to expand from 2 days per week toward a full-time position as company revenue approaches $10M, bringing increasing ownership of corporate forecasting, fundraising support, and the eventual management of a small internal finance and operations team.
