Australian Bookkeeper – Xero & BAS Support

Job Overview

Our client is looking for a reliable, detail-oriented, and proactive Australian Bookkeeper to support their growing business remotely. The successful candidate will be responsible for managing day-to-day bookkeeping functions across multiple companies while ensuring financial records are accurate, reconciliations are completed on time, and Australian bookkeeping standards are maintained.

Schedule

  • Monday - Friday, 8:30 AM - 5:30 PM Sydney Time, with 1 hour unpaid break (40 work hours per week)

Responsibilities

  • Manage daily Australian bookkeeping, including general ledger maintenance, journal entries, bank reconciliations, and maintaining accurate financial records.
  • Perform month-end and year-end bookkeeping activities, including journals, reconciliations, financial close, and general accounting support.
  • Handle the full Accounts Payable process, including supplier invoices, payment runs, supplier statement reconciliations, ageing reports, and invoice discrepancy resolution.
  • Manage Accounts Receivable by generating invoices, allocating customer payments, monitoring outstanding balances, maintaining ageing reports, and escalating overdue accounts.
  • Complete bank and credit card reconciliations, investigating and resolving any reconciliation discrepancies.
  • Support BAS preparation and GST compliance by preparing documentation and working with the Accountant during BAS preparation and lodgement, subject to onshore review.
  • Maintain bookkeeping records in Xero (and similar accounting software), process invoices and bills, manage customer and supplier records, prepare financial and cash flow reports, and provide finance administration and document management support.

Requirements

  • Minimum 3 years of Australian bookkeeping experience, with strong proficiency in Xero and experience supporting or preparing Business Activity Statements (BAS).
  • Solid experience managing Accounts Payable (AP), Accounts Receivable (AR), bank and credit card reconciliations, with a strong understanding of Australian GST and accounting principles.
  • Proficient in accounting, office, and administrative software, with excellent attention to detail, accuracy, adaptability, and the ability to learn new systems quickly.
  • Excellent written and verbal English communication skills, professional phone etiquette, strong customer service skills, and confidence communicating with clients, suppliers, and internal stakeholders regarding invoices, payments, and account enquiries.
  • Highly organized, accountable, and proactive, with the ability to work independently while collaborating effectively with an Australian-based team to deliver accurate bookkeeping, timely reconciliations, BAS support, and high-quality financial reporting.
  • Nice to have: Experience supporting Australian SMEs and using practice management software such as Karbon.
