Position Summary
We are seeking a detail-oriented Payroll & HR Compliance Specialist (UKG Ready/Gusto) to manage accurate, end-to-end multi-state payroll for clinical and administrative employees across Iowa, Illinois, Nebraska, and South Dakota. This role is responsible for payroll processing, HRIS data integrity, benefits administration, compliance, and employee lifecycle support. You'll also drive process improvements by identifying root causes, maintaining payroll documentation, and ensuring payroll and HR operations remain accurate, compliant, and scalable. The ideal candidate has strong multi-state payroll experience, excellent analytical skills, and thrives in a fast-paced, multi-site environment.

Key Responsibilities
Payroll Administration
- Process accurate, on-time multi-state payroll, including wages, bonuses, retro pay, deductions, garnishments, taxes, and benefits.
- Audit payroll and timesheet data, investigate discrepancies, resolve root causes, and maintain supporting documentation.
- Process final pay in compliance with state-specific regulations.
HRIS, Compliance & Auditing
- Maintain accurate payroll and employee records throughout the employee lifecycle.
- Ensure compliance with federal, state, and local payroll and labor regulations.
- Develop and maintain Payroll SOPs (Payroll Playbook) to support consistency and scalability.
- Support internal and external audits, including workers' compensation, unemployment claims, and benefits audits.
Benefits & Employee Operations
- Administer employee benefits, including enrollments, life events, terminations, and open enrollment.
- Support onboarding, employee changes, transfers, promotions, and offboarding.
- Serve as the primary contact for payroll, benefits, and HR-related inquiries while maintaining strict confidentiality.
Reporting & Process Improvement
- Prepare payroll and HR reports for leadership.
- Partner with HR, Finance, and Operations on system implementations and process improvements.
- Identify opportunities to automate workflows and improve payroll accuracy and efficiency.
Requirements
- 3+ years of hands-on multi-state payroll experience; healthcare, ABA, or multi-site workforce experience is preferred.
- Strong knowledge of payroll compliance, including FLSA (Fair Labor Standards Act), multi-state wage laws, payroll taxes, and garnishments.
- Experience using UKG Ready, Gusto, or similar payroll/HRIS platforms.
- Advanced proficiency in Microsoft Excel or Google Sheets, including data analysis functions such as pivot tables and lookups.
- Excellent analytical, organizational, problem-solving, and communication skills.
- High attention to detail, integrity, discretion, and the ability to manage sensitive information under strict deadlines.
Preferred
- Bachelor's degree in Human Resources, Business, Accounting, or a related field.
- Professional certification such as FPC, CPP, SHRM, or HRCI, or willingness to obtain one.
- Experience supporting benefits administration, HR operations, audits, and process documentation in a multi-site organization.
