Job Description
You will take ownership of cleaning up and maintaining the financial records for a growing media business, filing overdue GST and annual returns dating back to 2020, and establishing sustainable tax-compliant processes moving forward.
This is a high-impact role where you’ll:
- Structure the business for tax efficiency
- Manage multiple funding streams
- Handle payroll and salary distribution
- Ensure accurate depreciation tracking
You’ll work directly with the business owner to create financial clarity and free them to focus on growth, not red tape.
Schedule: Monday -Thursday, 8am-12pm - NZ hours
Responsibilities
- File overdue GST returns and annual returns dating back to 2020 with New Zealand IRD
- Reconcile transactions and financial records using Xero accounting software
- Ensure correct tax filings and compliance with New Zealand tax regulations
- Manage salary payments and business income distribution across multiple revenue streams
- Track depreciation and optimize tax efficiency without underpaying or overpaying
- Establish ongoing bookkeeping processes to prevent future backlogs
- Provide financial structure and reporting to support business scaling and expansion
- Maintain accurate records across multiple accounts and potentially consolidate entities
- Work with urgency to demonstrate progress to IRD within the first 10 days
- Support long-term financial management as the business grows annual turnover
Must-Have Requirements
- Proven experience with the New Zealand tax system, GST returns, and annual filings
- Demonstrable success handling overdue or emergency tax returns
- Proficiency with Xero accounting software
- Strong understanding of tax compliance, depreciation, and salary structuring
- Ability to work independently with minimal supervision
- Excellent communication skills for direct collaboration with the business owner
- Experience reconciling financial records and managing multiple revenue streams
Nice-to-Have Requirements
- Experience working with media or broadcasting industry clients
- Experience managing financial consolidation across multiple business entities or trusts
- Bookkeeping experience supporting small business scaling and growth phases
