Role Overview
The Social Media Assistant will be responsible for helping build and grow the organization’s presence across multiple social media platforms, including Facebook, Instagram, TikTok, X (formerly Twitter), and other relevant platforms. The ideal candidate will be highly proactive, creative, and comfortable working with emotionally significant storytelling and sensitive historical content. This person should be able to transform existing interviews, photographs, videos, media appearances, and exclusive access into engaging social media content that connects with and reaches new audiences.
Schedule: Part Time (20 hours per week) - flexible during client business hours
Key Responsibilities
Social Media Management
- Manage and maintain the organization’s social media accounts.
- Develop and execute a consistent social media posting strategy.
- Create and schedule engaging posts across Facebook, Instagram, TikTok and X.
- Repurpose existing content across multiple platforms.
- Identify opportunities to increase organic reach, engagement and followers.
- Monitor comments, messages, mentions and relevant conversations.
- Maintain consistent branding, messaging and tone across platforms.
Content Creation & Repurposing
- Turn interviews, photographs, videos and exclusive footage into social media content.
- Create short-form video content suitable for TikTok, Instagram Reels and other platforms.
- Develop compelling captions, headlines and calls-to-action.
- Identify strong moments from interviews and long-form footage that can be turned into short clips.
- Create content around survivor stories, family stories, memorial events, historical moments and the organization’s mission.
- Repurpose media appearances and interviews into multiple pieces of social content.
Audience Growth
- Develop strategies to increase visibility and reach.
- Identify relevant trends, hashtags, conversations and communities.
- Research potential audiences interested in 9/11 history, first responders, survivors, charitable causes and American history.
- Help increase website traffic from social media.
- Support strategies designed to turn social-media attention into website visitors, supporters, donors and customers.
Fundraising & Merchandise Promotion
- Promote the organization’s charitable mission and fundraising initiatives.
- Promote limited-edition and one-of-a-kind merchandise appropriately.
- Create social campaigns supporting donations and fundraising.
- Develop compelling calls-to-action encouraging people to donate, purchase merchandise or visit the organization’s websites.
- Support future crowdfunding campaigns by creating content designed to generate awareness and traffic.
- Track which content and campaigns generate the strongest response.
Media & Influencer Support
The organization has access to media appearances, influencers and unique interviews.
The Social Media Assistant will:
- Promote upcoming media appearances.
- Create content around interviews and appearances on legacy media and other outlets.
- Repurpose media coverage into social content.
- Support influencer collaborations.
- Help maximize exposure from interviews, appearances and special events.
- Coordinate social content around major announcements and appearances.
9/11 Anniversary Campaign
A major component of the role will be supporting the organization’s 25th-anniversary campaign.
The candidate should be able to help develop and execute a strong content calendar around the anniversary, including:
- Historical content
- Survivor stories
- First responder stories
- Family stories
- Memorial/service coverage
- Exclusive interviews
- Original photographs and video
- Anniversary-related merchandise
- Fundraising campaigns
- Media appearances
- Influencer content
Candidate Requirements
The ideal candidate should have:
- Previous experience managing social media accounts professionally.
- Strong knowledge of Facebook, Instagram, TikTok and X.
- Experience creating short-form video content (APPLICATIONS WITH PORTFOLIOS WILL BE PRIORITIZED)
- Strong written communication and copywriting skills.
- An understanding of social-media algorithms, engagement and organic growth.
- Experience with content scheduling and social media management tools.
- Ability to turn raw content into compelling social-media stories.
- Strong attention to detail.
- Ability to work independently with minimal supervision.
- Strong organizational and time-management skills.
- A proactive mindset and willingness to suggest new ideas rather than simply waiting for instructions.
- An understanding of nonprofit, charitable, fundraising, media or mission-driven organizations is beneficial.
