About the Role

We are looking for a highly experienced Senior PHP / AI Software Engineer to take ownership of a diverse portfolio of custom-built applications, internal platforms, APIs, integrations, databases, and automation systems.

This is a hands-on engineering role for someone who enjoys solving complex technical problems, working across existing and new systems, and turning loosely defined business needs into reliable software solutions.

PHP is at the core of much of our existing environment, with MySQL/MariaDB, JavaScript, Node.js, APIs, Linux, and automation playing important roles across the technology stack. At the same time, we are actively evolving our development approach through the use of modern AI coding agents and AI-assisted development workflows.

We are looking for an engineer who can use AI as a force multiplier—not a substitute for engineering judgment. You should be able to understand, evaluate, debug, secure, test, and maintain the code you produce, whether it was written manually or with AI assistance.

What You'll Do

Software Engineering

• Develop, maintain, and improve PHP-based web applications and internal business systems.
• Build backend services, APIs, integrations, automation tools, reporting systems, and internal applications.
• Work across both legacy PHP applications and modern development projects.
• Design and optimize MySQL/MariaDB databases and complex SQL queries.
• Develop services and applications using JavaScript and Node.js.
• Build and integrate REST APIs and third-party services.
• Investigate and resolve application, database, API, server, and production issues.
• Refactor and modernize legacy applications while maintaining reliability and business continuity.
• Work within Linux-based development and production environments.
• Use Git and established software development practices.
• Test, review, document, and validate your work before deployment.
• Own projects and technical problems from discovery through implementation, testing, and deployment.

AI-Assisted & Agentic Development

AI-assisted development is a core part of how we are evolving our engineering organization.

You will be expected to use modern AI coding tools to increase development speed and productivity while maintaining high standards for architecture, security, performance, reliability, and maintainability.

Experience with tools such as:

• Cursor
• Claude Code
• OpenAI Codex
• GitHub Copilot
• Other modern AI coding agents

is highly desirable.

You should be comfortable using AI to:

• Explore and understand unfamiliar codebases.
• Plan and break down complex development projects.
• Generate and improve PHP, JavaScript, Node.js, SQL, Bash, and related code.
• Debug and troubleshoot applications.
• Refactor and modernize existing systems.
• Create tests and technical documentation.
• Analyze code and identify potential issues.
• Coordinate changes across multiple files and components.
• Accelerate development without compromising engineering quality.

Most importantly, you must be able to critically review AI-generated code, identify incorrect or unsafe solutions, validate database changes, protect production systems, and explain the final implementation in your own words.

• Investigate why an existing PHP application suddenly stopped working.
• Identify why a MySQL query that used to run quickly is now taking several minutes.
• Determine why data between two systems does not match.
• Integrate a third-party API into an existing application.
• Automate a manual business process.
• Understand and extend a legacy PHP application.
• Modernize an older application or system.
• Turn a business idea into a working internal application.
• Review and correct a large AI-generated code change.
• Troubleshoot a production issue involving application code, databases, APIs, Linux services, and logs.

You should enjoy investigating problems deeply, understanding why something is happening, and delivering solutions that are reliable and maintainable—not simply applying temporary fixes.

What We're Looking For

Required Technical Experience

• Strong professional experience developing with PHP.
• Strong MySQL and/or MariaDB experience.
• Advanced SQL troubleshooting and query optimization.
• Strong JavaScript skills.
• Professional Node.js development experience.
• Experience building and consuming REST APIs.
• Strong application debugging and troubleshooting skills.
• Experience supporting production applications.
• Experience working with and modernizing legacy code.
• Linux command-line experience.
• Git and source-control experience.
• Solid understanding of application architecture, databases, HTTP, APIs, and web technologies.
• Ability to independently investigate and solve technical problems.
• Strong written and verbal English communication skills.

Preferred Experience

• Hands-on experience with AI coding agents such as Cursor, Claude Code, Codex, or GitHub Copilot.
• Python and/or Bash scripting.
• HTML/CSS.
• Modern JavaScript frameworks.
• Linux server administration.
• Apache or Nginx.
• Database performance optimization.
• Background jobs, queues, schedulers, and automation.
• Webhooks and third-party integrations.
• Telecommunications, VoIP, or call-center systems.
