Overview
Our client is seeking an Operational Finance Accountant to serve as the strategic financial guardian for a fast-growing Australian labor hire and facilities business. Working directly alongside executive leadership, you will take full ownership of multi-entity accounting, transition manual workflows into automated systems, and audit operational data—including hours, subcontractor invoices, and payroll discrepancies. Beyond routine reporting, you will analyze financial variances, build scalable frameworks, and ensure audit-ready standards to support rapid expansion and a future company sale. This role is ideal for an autonomous, analytical problem-solver who thrives on optimizing financial processes and understanding the "why" behind the numbers.
Schedule:
- Monday to Friday, 9 AM to 6 PM, Full-time (Australian Eastern Standard Time - Canberra)
Responsibilities
- Process and reconcile supplier invoices, ensuring timely payment and accurate record-keeping
- Maintain accurate profit and loss statements using Xero
- Cross-check third-party payroll provider invoices to ensure accuracy and catch discrepancies
- Categorize transactions correctly across two related companies, ensuring subcontractors, labor hire, and management expenses are properly allocated to the right ledger accounts
- Transition from manual bookkeeping processes to automated systems while maintaining vigilance over financial accuracy
- Monitor financial data as automation increases, shifting focus from data entry to financial oversight and exception management
- Prepare books for sustainable growth and future sale, maintaining investor-ready financial reporting standards
- Identify potential fraud or manipulation of hours and invoicing common in the labor hire industry
Requirements
- Proven experience taking full ownership of accounting/finance processes rather than just executing assigned tasks, with the capability to grow into a CFO-level or strategic finance role.
- Experience reporting directly to a General Manager, CFO, or senior leader, operating with a high level of autonomy, proactivity, and independent problem-solving.
- Strong track record in analyzing, improving, and building financial processes. Ability to investigate variances, manage overall operational finance, and understand the "why" behind the numbers.
- Minimum 2–3 years of accounting/bookkeeping experience with strong proficiency in Xero.
- Background in labor hire, facilities management, or related industries where hour tracking, subcontractor management, and billing mechanics (hours vs. revenue) are critical.
- Ability to spot irregularities, timesheet manipulation, and invoice fraud common in labor hire operations.
- High attention to detail with experience managing and allocating transactions across multiple company entities.
- Comfortable working in a direct, no-nonsense communication environment typical of the trades, security, and cleaning sectors.
